[Also in Division F2] A belting carcass comprises an inner core composed of a plurality of cords 10 extending longitudinally of the carcass and sandwiched between and bonded to a pair of core layers 12, 13, outer carcass threads 14, 15 being wound helically to opposite hands around the core and bonded thereto. The cords 10 are coated or impregnated with a bonding agent 11, and they may be of metal, such as steel, natural or synthetic yarn, such as cotton, rayon, polyamide, acrylic, polypropylene, polyester or yarns made from various blends of such materials, and may be staple, continuous filament or monofilament. The core layers may be of woven fabric, non-woven fabric or rubber sheet. In a modification, supplementary cord sheets 20, 21, Fig. 2, are provided. In a further modification, two inner cores 30, 31, Fig. 3, each formed of a respective sheet of cords 32, 33 embedded in or coated with a bonding agent 34 and wound twice with respective helicallywound inner carcass threads 35, 36 and 37, 38, are bonded together face to face and have bonded thereto core plies 39, 40 around which are wound and bonded outer helical carcass threads 41, 42. Apparatus for making a belt carcass of the form shown in Fig. 2 is described with reference to Figs. 4 and 5, Fig. 4 showing how cords from bobbins in a supply creel 50 pass through a guiding mechanism 51, tension rollers 53, an impregnating trough 56, a heating oven 57, tension rollers 59, a second impregnating trough 60, heating oven 57 and a cooking and tension control roller 64 to a reeling unit 65, and Fig. 5 showing how cord sheets 81, 84, 85 from reels 80, 82, 83 and web material 88, 89 from reels 86, 87 are passed through a preheating oven 90, heated pressure rollers 91, coating rollers 93, first and second carcass thread winders 96, 101, a preliminary gelling oven 103, coating rollers 108, a final gelling oven 110, heated pressure rollers 111 and cooling rolls 112, 113 to emerge as the finished carcass which is wound on to a wind-up reel 114. The winding is effected around edge supports which prevent tension in the carcass threads from affecting the shape of the belt.
