Abstract
1,172,941. Self-coking furnace electrodes. MONSANTO CO. 22 Feb., 1968 [23 Feb., 1967], No. 8677/68. Heading H5H. A self-coking furnace electrode 21 comprises an electrically conductive casing 25 connected by electrically and thermally conductive support means 26 such as fins, studs or ribs to an electrically and thermally conductive tubular shell 27, a heat insulating material 28 filling the space between shell 27 and easing 25, and an electrically and thermally conductive, thermally sensitive, carbon-forming paste 29 inside shell 27. The casing 25, shell 27 and support means 26 are preferably of carbon steel, but may be electrically conductive resins, structural carbon and graphite or fused silica, cast iron, stainless steel, copper-coated steel or alloys, iron, aluminium, nickel, nickel-tin alloys, or alloys of nickel, copper and titanium. The carbon-steel may be coated with copper or aluminium. Material 28 is a high alumina content cement, or cements prepared from bauxite clay, chrome brick or fireclay brick. The furnace electrode is solid, Figs. 1-3 (not shown), or hollow, with a carbon steel tube 22 for charging the furnace 20 via passage 23 therethrough. Current is supplied to the electrode 21 via leads 24, the electrode having a conventional seal 30.
