Abstract
1,172,868. Electro-slag casting. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 30 May, 1967 [31 May, 1966], No. 24143/66. Heading B3F. [Also in Division H5] In a process of electro-slag casting large ingots, a succession of consumable electrodes are melted in a cooled mould, each electrode contributing by its melting a proportion of the volume of the final required ingot. The electrodes 1 are fed into the mould 20 by a movable electrode clamp 2 which is actuable to clamp and release the electrodes by fluid pressure and spring means 7 and 9 respectively. The mould is water-cooled from a gallery 23 at its upper end, the cooling water running down the sides of the mould and being collected in a trough 24 at its bottom end. A mould bottom closure plate 21 is provided which together with the slag and the solidifying ingot completes the electrical circuit for the process operation. A number of electrodes may be melted simultaneously and succeeding electrodes can be brought into use one at a time by replacement in the holder as required. Electrodes may be of different compositions.
