Abstract

1,172,509. Sun-screening compositions. GAF CORP. 20 Dec., 1966 [29 Dec., 1965], No. 56896/66. Heading A5B. [Also in Divisions C2 and C5] Sun-screening compositions adapted for topical application to human skin comprise a hydrazone derivative of the formula wherein (Ar) 1 and (Ar) 2 are benzene rings; Y. and Z are organic acid groups; R is an aliphatic radical; and n and m are integers from 1 to 3; or a water-soluble salt, preferably an alkali metal, ammonium or amine salt, thereof; having absorption maxima within the range of from about 2900 to about 3500Š; and a cosmetic lotion and/or a dermatologically acceptable carrier. In the hydrazone derivative, Y is preferably a sulphonic acid group and Z is preferably a sulphonic acid or carboxylic acid group; and R is suitably a lower alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, which may be optionally substituted. The benzene nuclei may also be substituted by non-chromophoric substituents.
