Abstract

1,172,389. Snap-action counters. UNITED GAS INDUSTRIES Ltd. 26 Oct., 1967 [15 Dec., 1966], No. 56276/66. Heading G4D. [Also in Division F2] In a register mechanism, a snap-action transfer mechanism between a driving member 1 (e.g. a tenths wheel) and a driven indicia wheel 2 (e.g. a units wheel) comprises a pinion 10 having a lost motion connection with the wheel 1 and meshing a pinion 6 of the same diameter on a shaft 5, the pinion 6 carrying an out-of-balance weight 9 so that when the weight passes topdead centre it causes the pinion 6 and a Geneva mechanism driving arm 7 secured thereto to rotate rapidly through 180 degrees to advance the wheel 2, on which a Geneva wheel 8 is secured, from one numeral to the next. The lost motion connection comprises a stop 12 on the wheel 1 engageable with one or other of two diametrically opposite arms 11 on the pinion 10. The arms 11 carry flags 13 carrying numerals 9 and 0 respectively which show through a window in the tenths wheel 1 at the 0 position to indicate whether a jump has just occurred or is about to occur. A counterbalance weight (not shown) on the wheel 1 is provided to reduce the driving torque required to lift the weight 9 to its top dead centre position. The wheel 1 is integral with an input gear 4.
