Abstract

1,172,305. Direct connections. KAISER ALUMINUM & CHEMICAL CORP. 24 Feb., 1967 [9 March, 1966], No. 9051/67. Heading H2E. [Also in Division C3] A metal member for making electrical connection to a prebaked carbon anode for use in an electrolytic reduction cell is joined to the anode by a binder comprising furfuryl alcohol resin and graphite. The binder is prepared by impregnating the graphite with an acid catalyst, preferably organic, for the polymerization of the furfuryl alcohol resin and making a paste with the resin. Preferably, the graphite contains no + 8 Tyler mesh particles and only a - 200 screen fraction is impregnated. A lower stub portion of the member which may be integral with or bolted or welded to the member is heated to 100‹ to 250‹ C. and inserted into a cavity in the anode containing the paste, the heat of the member initiating the polymerization of the resin. This is completed by the heat generated in the electrolytic process.
