Abstract

1,172,291. Fifth wheel couplings. TASKERS TRAILERS Ltd., and R. L. NOYCE. 20 May, 1968 [22 Feb., 1967], No. 8448/67. Heading B7T. A fifth wheel assembly comprises a forked top plate 10 mounted on trunnions 14 carried by an upper frame 11, said frame having an inclined lower surface which bears on the correspondingly inclined upper surface of a sub-frame 12, there being supported by the upper frame a pair of axially aligned outwardly biased locking bolts 26 which are adapted to engage either of two pairs of aligned apertures 18, 19 in side members 15, 15a of the sub-frame, there also being supported by the upper frame manually operable crank means 32, 28, 29, 31 which may cause the bolts to be retracted from apertures 18 or 19 and held in said retracted position by the end of either arm 28 or 29 engaging spring blade 20 or 20a. As the upper frame is slid from one location to the other the arm 28 or 29 is released by the blade 20 or 20a but the bolts prevented from movement by the side frames 15, 15a until the second location is reached when they will snap into the other set of apertures. The bolts are biased by helical springs 27 and supported by webs 25 extending from upper frame cross member 22. The upper frame is slid on the sub-frame by means of a screw and nut device 40, 42.
