Abstract

1,172,257. Welding by fusion. MUREX WELDING PROCESSES Ltd. 16 May, 1968 [22 May, 1967], No. 23700/67. Heading B3R. [Also in Division C7] A manual arc welding electrode consists of a mild steel core and a flux coating containing iron powder in an amount of 50-90% by weight of the core and silicates and rutile in amounts such that the ratio of silicates (other than those present as a binder) to rutile is 0À85-1À25. The preferred silicates are mica, china clay and felspar and the first two should total not less than 6% of the coating. These silicates may be replaced in part by up to 7% total of talc, zircon or silica. The iron powder contains 0À1-0À15% carbon. The coating contains 4-8% manganese, e.g., as ferromanganese, and up to 2% deoxidizers, e.g., ferro-silicon or ferro-titanium. The silicates preferably do not exceed 7% of the whole electrode. The following coating compositions are specified:- A B Mica .. .. .. 6 3 China clay .. .. .. 4 5 Ferro-manganese (80% Mn) 9 7 Rutile .. .. .. 14 15 Felspar .. .. .. 4 5 Iron powder .. .. .. 61 61 Organic extrusion aids .. 2 2 Ferro-silicon (50% Si) . . 0 2 In Example A, a binder of sodium silicate was used and the extruded coating constituted 58% by weight of the electrode.
