Abstract

1,172,247. Plate heat exchangers. A.P.V. CO. Ltd. 3 April, 1967 [20 April, 1966], No. 17290/66. Heading F4S. A plate-type heat exchanger comprises a pack of substantially flat plates spaced apart by peripheral gaskets defining flow spaces between the plates, and a reinforcing mesh 7 between adjacent plates to provide interplate support within the flow spaces and to induce turbulence in the fluid flowing in the flow spaces. The flow characteristics between adjacent plates may be varied through the plate pack, e.g. by changing the wire size to vary the plate interspacing or by changing the size of the mesh. The constructions shown are intended for use with plates made of titanium, but conventional materials may be used in which case the peripheral gasket is received in a groove formed in the plate. As shown, a gasket retaining wire 8 attached to the periphery of the mesh and a secondary retaining wire (11, Fig. 2) are embedded in the rubber gaskets 9, 10, said gaskets being bonded to or integral with each other, the wire 8 extending outside the part 3, the wire 11 being located about the aperture 4. Alternatively the wires 8 and 11 can be replaced by thin flexible strips (15, Fig. 8). The mesh can be made from any suitable material, which for example may be of round or square section wire or which may be coated, e.g. with the same material from which the gasket is made, the wire intersections being joined by any suitable means and being aligned through the pack of plates to provide solid interplate support through the pack.
