Abstract

1,171,480. Extruding composite food products. KELLOGG CO. 31 Dec., 1966, No. 58501/66. Heading B5A. [Also in Division A2] An apparatus for making a composite food product comprises an extruder 10, an extrusion die 13, an axial tube 28 in said extruder projecting through and outwardly of the extrusion die and providing an annular path within said extruder and an annular die orifice, an inlet for the introduction of a food into said tube for extrusion therefrom in substantially unchanged condition, an inlet 12 for the introduction of cereal grain particles and moisture into said extruder about said tube for extrusion under pressure, heat being generated by said pressure, whereby the cereal is extruded in the form of a ready-to-eat expanded tube embracing the food extruded from the axial tube. Screw 20 is internally cooled by fluid entering at 34, exiting at 37 and flowing about fins 35 on tube 28. Heating on start-up is provided by a resistance element 42. The extrudate is cooled by air in a chamber (44), Fig. 1 (not shown), and is pelletized by a rotary knife (47).
