Abstract
1,170,983. Curing unsaturated polyesters. BP CHEMICALS (U.K.) Ltd. 8 July, 1968 [4 Aug., 1967], No. 35905/67. Heading C3P. A composition containing an unsaturated polyester is cured by mixing the composition with a catalyst system including an organic peroxidic compound, a cobalt or vanadium compound and a 2-mercapto-alcohol of the general formula where R, R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> can be the same or different and are selected from hydrogen, alkyl or aryl groups. The unsaturated polyester is a polycondensation product of dicarboxylic acids or anhydrides with dihydroxy alcohols, one of the acids containing a double bond. In the examples a polyester prepared from isophthalic acid, maleic anhydride and propylene glycol and dissolved in styrene is cured using cobalt naphthenate, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and 2- mercapto-ethanol. In comparative experiments tertiary dodecyl mercaptan, benzyl mercaptan, p-chlorophenyl mercaptan and N,N-dimethyl aniline were used.
