An overhead gas heater comprises a burner head 7 with ports 10 directing flames radially on to a baffle plate 11 of matted fibrous refractory material forming a radiant. A central hole 15 in the bottom casing 4 admits secondary air. A plate 16 is spaced above the hole 15 by legs 17. The bottom casing and also the baffle plate may be dished.
