Abstract
1,168,604. Electric incandescent lamps. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 3 April, 1968 [25 May, 1967], No. 16003/68. Heading H1F. In an electric incandescent lamp the filament 28 is supported between a first bridge 20 anchored to one end of the lamp envelope 12 and a second bridge 22 supported in floating relationship to the first bridge by means of a pair of resilient members 24 seated against and compressibly retained between the inner wall surfaces of the envelope. In operation, heat from the filament causes the members 24 to expand and move the bridge 22 away from the bridge 20 to accommodate the expansion of the filament. A spud wire 36 having a flexible bend 37 is embedded in the tip 14 of the envelope to increase the stability of the filament. The envelope is preferably oval in cross-section with the filament disposed in the plane of greatest diameter, the ratio of the width of the filament to the maximum diameter of the envelope being at least 1 : 3 and the maximum distance between the planar faces of the filament and the oppositely disposed walls of the envelope being less than the width of the filament. Alternatively, the envelope may be of circular cross-section and have longitudinal grooves or slots to receive the members 24. The lamp preferably contains bromine and an inert gas such as argon and/or nitrogen, and may have a fuse 41 in the cap.
