Abstract

[Also in Division G3] In a continuous controlled process of chemically reacting a gas with a liquid reaction mixture containing a reactant, liquid reaction mixture from 18 is passed through a plurality of reactors 1-5 in series within which the liquid is in surface contact with a gas from 26 introduced to reactor 5 via pipe 25 and optionally introduced via similar pipes to reactors 2, 3, 4. The degree of surface contact of the gas with the reaction mixture caused by rotation of stirrers 10 and 34 in at least the last reactor 5 is controlled by differences between the extent of reaction required and achieved, respectively, where essentially only those differences between the extent of reaction required in the product and the extent of reaction achieved in the reaction mixture at a position subsequent to the penultimate reactor 4 are used for such control, and the differences thus used are employed to reduce the differences between the extent of the reaction required and achieved in the product, respectively. Thus the refractive index of a sample drawn through tube 31 may be measured at 32, a corresponding signal transmitted to controller 33 which compares the signal with a standard representing the extent of reaction required and transmits a further signal controlling the motor of stirrer 34 and possibly the motors controlling the similar stirrers 10.
