Abstract
1,167,731. Mineral-mining machines. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. 23 March, 1967 [22 April, 1966], No. 1779.8/66. Heading E1F. Steering equipment for a mineral-mining machine 1 involves a mechanical, electrical or ultra sonic tracer arrangement 16 responsive to change in the distance between a mine surface S, e.g. a roof, and the machine 1, the tracer arrangement 16 operating through suitable control means, such as 6, 7, 8, 9, a ram that is so incorporated in the machine as to be able to maintain the distance between the surface and the machine at a constant determined by the chosen characteristic of the variable characteristic of the control means. Preferably, the tracer 16 reciprocably operates an arm 6 carrying cams 7 operating switches 8, 9 that control expansion and contraction of the ram. The switches 8, 9 are mounted in a housing 20 slidably mounted on the machine and reciprocable relative to the arm 7 through a Bowden cable by trip levers 13A, 13B cooperating with manually settable bell crank levers 10A, 10B disposed along the mine face and set in accordance with the required operating characteristics desired of the control means as the machine is moved along the face.
