1,167,290. Stabilization of cyclic ester polymers. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 23 May, 1967 [25 May, 1966], No. 23913/68. Divided out of 1,161,932. Heading C3R. Polymers of cyclic esters of hydroxycarboxylic acids are stabilized with (i) an ester of phosphorous acid and a polyhydric alcohol and/or (ii) an ester or ester-salt of a phosphoric acid in which at least two of the oxygen atoms have been replaced by sulphur atoms. Specified for (i) are esters of phosphorous acid and ethylene glycol, butanediol, glycerol, trimethylol propane and pentaerythritol and similarly esters in which up to <SP>1</SP>/ 3 of the hydroxyl groups of the phosphorous acid are esterified by monohydric alcohols or phenols. Specified for (ii) are O,O- diethyl - S - ethylmercaptoethyldithiophosphate and its O,O.dimethyl analogue, 0,0-diethyl-S- phenylmercaptomethyldithiophosphate, trialkyl (e.g. trilauryl) and triaryl trithiophosphates and O,O-diethyl zinc dithiophosphate. As additional stabilizers there may be used, phenylbeta-naphthylamine, various sterically hindered phenols, tetraalkylthiuram disulphides, dilauryl-beta-thiodipropionate and tri-(nonylphenyl)- phosphite. The stabilizers may be added before, during or after the polymerization of the cyclic ester. Many cyclic esters are referred to but the preferred ones are alpha, alpha-dialkyl-beta. propiolactone (especially pivalolactone).
