Abstract
1,166,436. Thermal regenerators. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE, and INSTITUT BADAN JADROWYCH. 24 Jan., 1968 [2 Feb., 1967], No. 3640/68. Heading F4K. A thermal regenerator of the pebble bed type comprises upper and lower enclosures A, B through which respectively pass upwardly flows of a heating gas and a gas to be heated by the pebbles of refractory material which move downwardly through the chambers via a junction assembly C having a spout composed of elements 48, 52, 58 of refractory material in vertically stacked relation to delimit a vertical duct, each element being formed of similar sectors to avoid heat expansion stresses. The element 48 comprises a frusto-conical outer wall adapted to bear on a cooled, metallic support plate 44 which also supports the housing 40 and lining 10 of the upper enclosure. The central element 52 is supported on a first domical vault 54 which serves as a thermal barrier between the plate 44 and the gas discharged from the lower enclosure into an outlet duct 32 via a collector space 56 formed between the vault 54 and a second domical vault 60 having ducts 62 therein for pasasge of the gas and which vault supports the bottom element 58 of the spout. The heating gas enters the upper enclosure through ducts 18 and passages 20 which are partially obstructed by piled balls 46 to prevent entry thereinto of the pebbles.
