Abstract

1,166,361. Delustred monofilament ribbon. MONSANTO CO. 2 Jan., 1967 [17 Jan., 1966 (2)], No. 154/67. Heading B5B. A delustred monofilament ribbon is prepared from a synthetic filament-forming material, and is characterized by comprising broad surfaces having a multiplicity of distinct protuberances 18 occurring on the broad surfaces and extending in the direction of the longer dimension of the ribbon 16, to divide the broad surfaces into several planar areas 20 which occur between the protuberances, the planar areas being staggered with respect to each other on opposite broad surfaces, and the dimensional ratios being C/A 0À05 to 1À0; B/A 0À3 to 4À0; D/C 0À1 to 4À0; and E/A 0À5 to 2À0, wherein A is the ribbon thickness, B is the distance between the centres of protuberances, C is the protuberance thickness, D is the protuberance height, and E is the base to base distance between protuberances (see Fig. 1), a melt of the synthetic polymeric material being extruded through a slotted orifice 12 contained in a spinneret plate 10, the orifice having a plurality of serrations 14 spaced alternately of each other along the opposite longer walls of the orifice, and the extrusion then being quenched with water. Any polymer capable of being melt spun may be used, nylon 66, nylon 6, nylon 4, nylon 610, nylon 11 and copolymers thereof, polyesters derived from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol, and from terephthalic acid and bis - 1,4 - (hydroxymethyl) - cyclohexane, and polypropylene are specified. The delustred synthetic ribbon may be used to simulate natural grass.
