Abstract

1,166,355. Pressing fruit. AMERICAN SUGAR CO. 11 Sept., 1967 [15 Sept., 1966], No. 41449/67. Heading A4C. [Also in Division B1] In a fruit press of the travelling band type in which the fruit is pressed between a pair of permeable webs 14, 15 threaded in serpentine fashion over a plurality of rollers, said rollers are mounted on the supporting frame at one end only in cantilever fashion. Fruit is fed on to band 14 by means of a tube 17 parallel to the rollers and containing a screw conveyer 18, a spreader plate 19 aiding in distribution. Pressed pulp is removed from web 15 by means of a scraper plate 20. Juice is collected in shrouds 62 with delivery conduits 63. Rollers 11 and 12 are mounted on pivoted arms adjustable by threaded means, e.g. 58, for controlling belt tension and roller 16 is similarly mounted for adjusting the throat opening of the press. Fig. 4 shows the cantilever mounting of a single roller 1 comprising an axle 37 bolted thereto and passing through a boss 32 on the machine frame, bearings 40 and 41 being thus able to be situated a sufficient distance apart to provide cantilever support. A hydraulic motor 44 is fitted to certain of the rollers. The frame of the machine consists of a number of separate castings, e.g. 21-27 and 29 bolted together so that it may be assembled in different ways with varying numbers of rollers. In a particular embodiment having 2 pressing stages (Fig. 9, not shown) only rollers 1, 2, 3, 10, 13 and 16 are present, belt 15 is omitted and belt 60 co-operates with a shortened belt (14<SP>1</SP>) passing directly from roller 3 to roller 10, pressed fruit pulp being discharged at the periphery of roller 3.
