Abstract
1,166,039. Projectile fuzes. OERLIKONBUHRLE HOLDING Ltd. 6 Dec., 1966 [6 Dec., 1965], No. 54587/66. Heading F3A. Projectile fuze for use at direct or oblique angles of impact, comprising a spring loaded striker 22 held against displacement under the action of a spring 23 by balls 24 which extend through apertures in a guide 6 and are retained in a recess 26 in the striker by a displaceable sleeve 25 which, during transport, is locked against displacement under the action of a laterally and axially movable inertia element 27 by a locking element 30 which is pressed by a spring 34 against a slide 9 carrying a primer 10. A ball 33 co-operates with the locking element and sleeve 25, and a pin 16 locks the slide in a safety position. On launching a projectile fitted with the fuze, the pin 16 sets back and frees the slide which, after the projectile has left the barrel of the weapon from which it is fired, is moved by springs surrounding pins in the slide, to a position in which the primer is aligned with the striker. The locking element 30, thus freed, is then displaced by the spring 34, so that the ball 33 can move outwardly to unlock the sleeve 25. On impact the element 27 is thrown forwardly and lifts the sleeve 25 so that the balls 24 move outwardly and release the striker which is driven against the primer by spring 23. At oblique angles of impact the element 27 moves laterally up the surface 27a to lift the sleeve 25 If the fuze has not been armed during flight, then on impact the flange 6a is sheared off, so that the striker and associated elements can be displaced by the spring 23. In a modification (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) where the fuze is used as a base fuze, the ball 33 is omitted and the locking element bears directly on the sleeve 25. In another modification the striker is displaceable in a sleeve (39, Fig. 4, not shown) locked by the balls 24, so that the striker can act directly on impact or be driven against the primer by a spring (40) when the sleeve (39) is freed. The striker is also arranged to set back into a bore in the slide to lock the slide until the projectile has left the barrel of the weapon.
