Abstract

116,601. Burnard, S. L. Aug. 3, 1917. Movable-abutment type; cooling parts; working-fluid supply.-In a rotary internal-combustion engine having two sets of cam-operated sliding or hinged abutments 31 - - 34, 41 - - 44 arranged in pairs as shown and acting respectively as inlet and exhaust valves, the abutments are actuated so that the piston vanes 22, 24 draw in the charge and expel the exhaust, while the vanes 21, 23 act as power and compression vanes, the compressed charge being transferred from the front to the rear of each vane 21, 23 as it passes the cavities 71 - - 74, where it is ignited. Grooves are formed in the casing to support the edges of the abutments when in the operative position. A water-jacket 9 is provided, and the shaft and piston may have water circulated through them. Instead of the abutments serving as valves, separate valves may be employed, for example a poppet valve or an oscillating valve. Any number of piston vanes and pairs of abutments may be employed.
