Abstract
1,165,543. Growing plants. P. S. NISULA. 27 Sept., 1966 [27 Sept., 1965], No. 43178/66. Heading A1E. [Also in Division B8] Seeds and seedlings are packed and reared in a layer of growing medium e.g. peat, on a backing sheet, being arranged so that the general direction of root growth is parallel to the backing sheet. A second sheet may be secured to the first by sewing &c. to sandwich the growing medium between them (not shown). A roll or stack of the layer and its sheet may have seeds or seedlings introduced into one or more layer edges. The roll or stack may be bound e.g. as at 16, Fig. 3. The backing sheet may have transverse partitioning folds, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), to separate individual seedlings. Alternatively the layer may be discontinuous. The seeds or seedlings may be laid on the layer prior to rolling &c. Sand may be used to prevent adhesion between layers. Apparatus for forming the package may comprise a belt 1 forwarding the backing sheet 3 beneath fillers 4, 5 for growing medium and fertilizer respectively. Rollers 6, 7 consolidate the layers and a knife 9 severs off lengths as desired. Alternatively, a sheet may be located in a frame and growing medium sprinkled on it and compressed by unspecified means.
