Dentifrice compositions containing a fluoride, contain a mixture of magnesium ammonium phosphate and calcium hydrogen phosphate as a polishing and abrasive agent. The fluoride may be that of an alkaline earth metal, e.g. magnesium, or an alkali metal, e.g. potassium or sodium, or a mixture or double salt thereof. The polishing agent salts are preferably present as hydrates, i.e. the hexahydrate of the Mg salt and the dihydrate of the Ca salt. Other ingredients mentioned are humectants, e.g. glycenol, sorbitol or urea; binders, e.g. carboxymethyl cellulose, tragacanth or agar; surface active or foaming agents, e.g. lauryl sulphate; flavouring and sweetening agents and preservatives; also unspecified antiseptics, bleaches, astringents, deodourizing and anticareous agents may be present. The compositions may take the form of tooth powders, tooth soaps, or tooth-pastes. The polishing agents used are said not to combine with or adsorb fluoride ions. A comparative Example is included for a composition lacking magnesium ammonium phosphate.
