Abstract

1,165,142. Latches. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. 15 June, 1967 [7 July, 1966], No. 30471/66. Heading E2A. A car door latch having a rotatable toothed bolt comprises a detent lever 5 which prevents unlatching movement of the bolt, first and second actuator levers 7, 14 which, through a link 9, can rock the detent lever to free the bolt and a child safety selector lever 60'which projects from the shut face of the door and renders effective or ineffective a connection between an interior door handle and the second actuator lever 14. As shown, the selector lever 60 has a slot 62 by which it moves the end 16 of a rod connected to the interior door handle along one arm 64 of an L-shaped slot in the second actuator lever 14 from the position shown in which it'is effective to rock the lever 14 to the dotted-line position in which it moves idly along an arm 65 of the slot. The first actuator lever 7 is actuated by an outside push button and the link 9 to which it is coupled has a' tail which can be moved by a trip lever 18, actuated by a cylinder lock or. by a sill push button, so that a shoulder 12 on the link which normally engages the detent lever 5 will move idly past it. If the door is slammed with the trip lever 18 in locking position, rocking of the detent lever 5, by its cooperating ratchet wheel on the bolt shaft, rocks a lever 28 which through its ear 29a restores the link 9 and trip lever 18 to unlocking position. However, if the outside push button is held depressed at this time, a shoulder 30 on the link 9 will be below the path of the ear 29a and so the mechanism will remain locked.
