Abstract
1,164,945. Waveguide dissipative loads. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 13 May, 1968 [16 May, 1967], No. 22696/67. Heading H1W. A non-reflective, dissipative termination for a waveguide includes a length of waveguide having two parallel tubes of lossfree material through which a lossy fluid may be circulated, arranged with their axes transverse to the longitudinal axis of the guide, and spaced apart in the axial direction by a distance of (2n-1) #/4, where n is an integer and # is the wavelength in the guide to be absorbed by the termination. The two tubes 2 and 3 are arranged to provide cancellation of reflected energy at the input end of the assembly by choosing tube 2 to be of suitably smaller diameter; to avoid the use of an inconveniently small diameter, it is also, as shown, off-set from the centre plane of the guide. Water is circulated through the two tubes, the standing wave system set up in the region between the two tubes causing large power losses, and any residual energy leaking past the resonant section being absorbed in a third tube 4 connected in series with tubes 2 and 3 for the circulation of water therethrough.
