Abstract

1,163,487. Rectifying. M. HORINO. 30 Nov., 1967, No. 54677/67. Heading H2F. [Also in Division G3] A voltage regulator comprises A.C. input terminals to; a controlled rectifier 1, e.g. a thyristor, connected to provide a D.C. output at terminals t 1 which may supply a load such as a photographic flash lamp; and a circuit including a switch 2, e.g. a transistor, for controlling the switching of rectifier 1 in such a manner that the output voltage is maintained constant, the switch 2 being associated with a reference Zener diode 4 and a photo-electric cell 6 arranged to receive light from a discharge tube 7, e.g. a neon tube, connected across the terminals t 1 . When the D.C. output voltage is below a desired value no discharge occurs in the tube 1, the photo-electric cell has a high impedance so that transistor 2 is non-conductive, and the rectifier 1 is maintained in a conductive state by a gate voltage derived from the input terminals t 0 by way of resistors R 1 to R 8 and diodes 3, 5. When the output voltage exceeds the desired value, the tube 1 conducts to illuminate the photo-electric cell the resistance of which decreases, whereby transistor 2 becomes conductive to short-circuit the gate voltage applied to rectifier 1 which thus causes the output voltage to fall, and this cycle is repeated so that the output voltage is maintained substantially constant. The regulator may include further capacitors and diodes to give a voltage-doubling effect, and two such modifications are described with reference to Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown).
