1,163,421. Treating gases with liquids or solids; contacting immiscible liquids. HYDRONYL Ltd. 1 Aug., 1966 [11 Aug., 1965], No. 34428/65. Headings B1F and B1R. Apparatus for contacting a gas or vapour with a liquid or fluent solid material or contacting two immiscible liquids of different densities comprise a plurality of horizontal trays arranged in a vertically spaced relationship and over which a stream of the fluent solid material or heavier fluid material flows in succession, each tray comprising a frame supporting at least one layer of an inherently permeable material. The inherently permeable material may be a sintered material formed from glass or metal particles or it may be a knitted or woven fabric made from natural or synthetic fibres. Alternatively the inherent permeable material may be wire gauze, a porous ceramic material or an open-cell foam material. A layer inherently permeable material may be formed of two of the above specified materials and if desired a material may be reinforced by including fibre or metal reinforcements. The frame supporting the inherently permeable layer may be a grid and as shown the layer may be overlain by a second grid.
