Abstract

1,163,333. Drying tobacco. HAUNI-WERKE KORBER & CO. K.G. 18 Nov., 1966 [12 March, 1966], No. 51879/66. Heading F4G. [Also in Division G1] In a method of treating tobacco, the tobacco 3 moves along a perforated conveyer 4 through a hot air dryer 6, through which air is drawn by a fan 16 and having an electrical heating element 14 and a slotted screen 20 to distribute the hot air over the whole width of the dryer 6, the tobacco then passing through a chamber 8 wherein cooling air is passed through the tobacco on the conveyer from an inlet 22 to an off-take 26, the temperature difference between the air before and after passage through the tobacco being measured by detectors 24, 28, this difference value being used to estimate the temperature of the tobacco. The detectors 24, 28 are connected to a temperature difference measurement converter 48, which may be used to control the heater 14 in the dryer 6, and from the chamber 8 the tobacco passes to a moistening chamber 10. A radio frequency heating emitter 43 may additionally be provided in the dryer 6, and instead of using the whole of the air flow in the chamber 8, a separate temperature measuring branch air flow may be provided.
