Abstract
1,161,593. Tensioning devices. CABLE COVERS Ltd. 31 Oct., 1966 [4 Aug., 1965], No. 33268/65. Heading F2G. An hydraulic or pneumatic jack for stressing wires, tendons or other elongate members comprising an outer tube 2, an inner tube 4, and an intermediate piston tube 5, is provided with an electrical, mechanical, or combination of electrical and mechanical load-measuring device or devices of the compression type 60 to signify the load applied to the tendon or member being stressed, said device or devices being operatively positioned between the outer tube end and a load-bearing member secured directly or indirectly to the inner tube. As shown, the loadmeasuring device is tubular and is carried on a tubular extension 58 screwed to the inner tube, a nut 62, or alternatively a flange, being provided on said extension to act as a load-bearing member. In operation, the tendon or member being stressed (not shown), is entered into the front of the jack with attendant barrels and wedges (not shown) being positioned in a recess 20 formed in a nozzle body 16 secured to the piston tube, said nozzle bearing against a bearing plate of the member to the prestressed by the tendon. Pressure fluid is admitted to a port 70 and outer tube is moved to the right producing a corresponding movement of the inner tube to the right by transmission of the load through the load measuring device 60, nut 62 and extension tube 58. An annular wedge ring 26 carried by the inner tube forces a serrated wedge member 24 to grip the tendon. Further pressure is applied until the desired tensioning of the tendon as signified by the load-measuring device or devices is achieved. Pressure fluid is then admitted to channels 76, 78 to move a locking plunger 38 forwardly to urge the barrels and wedges of the tendon into locking engagement with the bearing plate thereby holding the tendon in the stressed condition. Fluid pressure is then admitted to the other side of the piston to release the wedge 24.
