Abstract
1,161,316. Bollards. GLOSTER DESIGN SERVICES Ltd. 19 Oct., 1966 [29 Oct., 1965], No. 45897/65. Heading B7S. [Also in Divisions B8 and F2] In a bollard three telescopic spring units 1 are attached to a cross-beam 3, which carries an attachment or anchor point 4 for the ship's cable, so that eighteen inches to forty inches movement of the anchor point is permitted consequent upon movement of the cable in conditions of rough weather or swell. The cross-beam 3 carries a mechanism which permits engagement of either the central spring unit only or the two outer spring units only or all three spring units. Resilience may therefore be adjusted to suit conditions of operation. In the embodiment described the box containing the spring units is freely mounted between horizontal trunnions 5 on rotatable carriage 6. Other embodiments include means for absorbing with limited damage only the energy released by breakage of the ship's cable at high loads.
