1,161,015. Absorbing body fluids, masks. C. R. BARD Inc. 2 Oct., 1967, No. 44750/67. Headings A5R and A5T. [Also in Divisions A3 and B5] Absorbent appliances such as dressings, surgical masks and' catamenial appliances comprise fibrous means, e.g. cellulosic or glass fibre material, for distributing liquid to solid absorptive material, such as activated charcoal, cellulose acetate tow, hydrous calcium silicate and porous alumina, for retaining the liquid, such absorptive material being capable of maintaining its solid state after absorbing liquid and of retaining liquid under pressure, and a liquid-impermeable film which encloses the fibrous means and the solid absorptive material but is provided with liquid ingress means to the fibrous means. A dressing 54 for absorbing urine from an ileostomy stoma comprises a glass fibre plug 68 leading to a manifold 70 and wicks 60, 60a, 62, 62a, 64, 64a also of glass fibre and to packets 74 of hydrous calcium silicate in fine powder form. A polythene cover comprises layers 78 and 80 sealed together at 82, the layer 78 having a reinforced aperture 86 to communicate with the stoma.
