Abstract
1,160,951. Purifying tris-chloropropyl phosphate. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 24 Aug., 1966 [3 Sept., 1965], No. 37697/65. Heading C2C. Tris-chloropropyl phosphate obtained by reacting propylene oxide with POCl 3 in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. TiCl 4 , and containing malodorous impurities is purified by steam distillation. In carrying out the process steam at atmospheric, sub-atmospheric or elevated pressure may be passed through the trischloropropyl phosphate which may, optionally, be heated. In one of the examples the residue from the steam distillation is stirred with calcium hydroxide, dried in vacuo at 65- 70‹ C. for 4 hours and filtered with kieselguhr to give the purified product. The purified trischloropropyl phosphate is particularly suitable as a flame-proofing agent for polyurethane foams and for this purpose may be incorporated in a reaction mixture containing an organic polyisocyanate, a polyol of molecular weight of at least 250 and a gas generating agent, e.g. in the mixture used in the process disclosed in Specification 1,159,435.
