Abstract
1,160,632. Catheters; withdrawing fluids. VOLYNSKOE OBLASTNOE UPRAVLENIE SELSKOGO KHOZYAJSTVA. 5 April, 1967, No. 15644/67. Heading A5R. A catheter for passage through a nasal passage to the abomasum of a ruminant animal comprises a flexible tube 2 disposed within an outer hose 1 and having an inflatable bulb 3 at the forward end and a syringe 4 for inflating the bulb at the other end. The syringe and a pressure gauge are connected to the tube through a cock 5. A ring 7 is adjustable on the hose 1 to limit the length of the device entering the animal and a stop 8 prevents the flexible tube extending through the hose further than is necessary for the bulb to project from the hose. In use, with the bulb projecting from the hose, the bulb is inflated to a size approximating that of an alimentary bolus and is swallowed by the animal until it reaches the oesophagus. Thereafter, the bulb is reduced in size and food or a taste bud stimulant is given to the animal which then swallows again to carry the bulb to the abomasum. The bulb is then withdrawn into the hose so that a sample of the abomasum contents enters the hose.
