Abstract

1,160,324. Typewriters. SCM CORP. 7 April, 1967 [26 April, 1966], No. 16083/67. Heading B6F. Multi-colour ribbon arrangement; fast winding feeding.- An ink-ribbon has a portion of its length one colour and another portion of its length a different colour and, at the portion of the ribbon where the different coloured lengths meet, is an abutment, e.g. a button 14, which actuates a ribbon reversing member 16 when half of the ribbon is on one spool, e.g. 82, and a further button, at the end of the ribbon attached to spool 82, operates a reversing member 66 when all the ribbon is wound on the other spool 96. To bring the other colour on the other half of the ribbon into use, a fast winding feed from a motor 102, Fig. 4, is used; this drives belts 104 and a shaft 100. The drive from this shaft to a ribbon feed shaft 22 is coupled by a belt 110 on a lever 106 actuated by a control key 114. The key 114 has two directions of movement according to which colour, i.e. which end of the ribbon, is required. The key 114 tilts a lever 126 one way or the other to operate the ribbon reversing mechanism but in both directions the belt 110 is tilted so the fast drive from the shaft 100 is coupled to the ribbon feed-shaft 22. Ribbon reversing, automatic.-The shaft 22 may be axially shifted to effect a drive to either the left or right-hand spool. For normal typing actions, a shaft 50 is rocked at each operation and a bail finger 20 rocks, clear of engagement with a step portion 42 on a conditioning lever 32. However, when a button 14 indicates the end of a particular colour length by its engagement with either reversing levers 16 or 66, the ribbon reversing mechanism is actuated so that the step portion 42 is engaged by the finger 20. This causes a fork 27 to rock clockwise and the shaft 22 is axially shifted by a disc 44 positioned between the fork. The reversing members 16, 66 which are engaged by the buttons 14 are formed of two parts sprung together so that when a different colour end of the ribbon is required the middle of three buttons 14, which is thinner than the buttons at either end, may pass through the levers. Ribbon guide.-The ribbon vibrator guide 89 is shaped at 90 to allow passage of the middle button 14.
