Abstract

1,160,262. Fibrillation of film. LINEN INDUSTRY RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 7 Oct., 1966 [7 Oct., 1965; 8 March, 1966], Nos. 42527/65 and 10022/66. Heading B5B. Staple fibre and yarn from such fibre is produced by treating a film made from a long chain linear polymer such as a polyolefin, or from cellulose, by subjecting it to fibrillation to the point where the film is reduced to staple fibre, varying degrees of shrinkage potential being introduced into the material prior to its reduction to staple fibre, either prior to, or after stretching of the film, or into fibrillated tow or sliver after conversion of the staple fibre into yarn or other material. It may be subjected to a uniformly applied shrinkage treatment causing the staple fibre to shrink differentially. Various methods of fibrillation are described such as by using a flare tow scutcher followed by a flare or jute card.
