Abstract

1,159,994. Polymer compositions. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 21 June, 1967 [18 July, 1966; 23 Sept., 1966(2)], Nos. 32169/66, 42616/66 and 42617/66. Headings C3P and C3R. [Also in Division C7] Compositions comprise a polymer and 1 to 50 weight per cent of glass fibres of diameter 1 to 30 Á and having a coating of silver, copper or nickel of thickness one fortieth to one quarter Á. Specified polymers are phenol/formaldehyde, urea/formaldehyde, amine/formaldehyde, crosslinkable polyester and polyurethane resins; and polyamides, polyesters, polycarbonates, polysulphones polyethers, polyimides, polyolefins, polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl chloride; polytetrafluoroethylene, and silicone, ABS and natural rubbers. The compositions may be formed by placing the coated fibres in a mould and impregnating with a thermosetting resin precursor, mixing a thermosetting resin precursor or polymerizable monomer with a filler to form a dough and blending the dough with the coated fibres, or by mixing the fibres with a molten thermoplastic polymer or with a dispersion of a polymer in a liquid vehicle. The compositions may be used as electroluminescent compositions, and formed into electrically conducting articles such as conductors, resistors and heating elements. Examples describe compositions of metal coated glass fibres and (2, 3, 4, 14 and 19) polyethylene; (5, 6 and 15) thermosetting polyester resin together with (7 and 16-18) calcium stearate and calcium carbonate; (8) nylon; (9) polytetrafluoroethylene; (10) polymethyl methacrylate prepared by polymerizing methyl methacrylate in the presence of the coated fibres, blue pigment and azodiisobutyronitrile; (11) polystyrene; and (12) a polyurethane prepared from bis(p-iso-cyanatophenyl)methane and oxypropylated glycerol, in the presence of (13) calcium carbonate.
