Abstract
1,159,971. Fuel elements. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. 4 July, 1966 [2 July, 1965], No. 28231/65. Heading G6C. A fuel element comprises an upper tubular end-piece 1, a body portion 9 containing fuel pins 10, and a lower tubular end-piece 3. The end-pieces 1, 3 are located in apertures in upper and lower grids 2, 4 of the reactor core and when the fuel element is to be inserted or removed the grid 2 is first removed. The fuel element is held latched in the core by levers 5, 6 pivoted to the end-piece 3 and having thus fingers 5a, 6a maintained engaged with the underside of the grid 4 by means of a cam surface 13 on an actuator rod 12. The upper end of the rod 12 is attached to a plate 16 integral with the endpiece 1 this plate sliding on studs 17, 18 fixed to the body portion 9 and being biased by springs surrounding the studs. Thus, when the fuel element is to be removed by a grab (not shown) engaging beneath a flange 11, the endpiece 1 together with the rod 12 move upwardly relatively to the body portion 9 so that the cam surface 13 engages the latch lever ends 14 and the fingers 5a, 6a leave the grid 4 so that further upward movement of the grab removes the fuel element. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), the end-piece 1 is rigid with the body portion 9 and the rod 12 is connected by a spider (30) and rods (31) to a collar (32) having a step (33). When the grab engages the step (33) the rod 12 is raised to disengage the latch levers and when the step engages the flange 11 further movement of the grab causes withdrawal of the fuel element.
