Abstract

1,159,901. Casting composite tyre moulds. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. 3 Jan., 1968 [24 Jan., 1967], No. 231/68. Heading B3F [Also in Division B5] The aluminium tread-forming ring of a tyre mould is cast with stainless steel blade inserts 26 of which the upper parts 50 protrude from the cast aluminium. Venting of the mould is obtained by inclined narrow channels 52 which are not filled by the aluminium during casting owing, it is thought, to viscosity or surface tension effects. The blade 26 is locked in the casting by apertures 46, but it may be loosened for increased venting by hammering or vibration during machining, or by localized heating of the blade to cause it to expand. Smear metal at the end of the venting passages may be removed after casting by chemical etching.
