Abstract

1,159,666. Hydration of olefins. HIBERNIA CHEMIE G.m.b.H. 22 July, 1966 [24 July, 1965], No. 33159/66. Heading C2C. Alcohols are prepared by catalytic hydration of C 3-6 mono-olefins at 140-250‹ C. under a pressure of 10-100 atmospheres in the presence of a contact catalyst comprising a carrier substance and phosphoric acid, the amount of phosphoric acid in the catalyst carrier substance being determined by a pre-run under the conditions of subsequent operation and in an inert atmosphere until substantially no acid is removed. The hydration may be effected in the gaseous or liquid phase. In the preferred catalysts, the weight ratio of phosphoric acid, calculated as 100% acid, and the carrier does not exceed 1:10. The preferred carrier material is acid treated montmorillonite which has been brought to an Al 2 O 2 content of less than 10%. The catalyst can be prepared by saturating the carrier with dilute phosphoric acid, draining the impregnated carrier and subjecting to the prescribed pre-treatment to remove excess acid. Examples relate to the preparation of isopropanol from propylene. The process is illustrated by reference to a flow diagram (not shown).
