Abstract

1,159,208. Coating webs. FUJI SHASHIN FILM K. K. 4 Nov., 1966 [4 Nov., 1965], No. 49629/66. Heading D1L. In the coating of a continuously moving web 1 by a coating means comprising a doctor edge 4 spaced a small distance from the web and chamber 5 containing the coating liquid directly behind the doctor edge, a space 8 is retained above the liquid within the chamber by means of a liquid level sensor 6 and the space is placed under the action of a vacuum pump 7. By providing such a space, a pressure gradient is applied to the coating liquid between the doctor edge and the web such that the pressure decreases in the direction opposite to the direction of travel of the web. As a result the thickness of the coated layer can be reduced to less than half the clearance between the doctor edge and the web surface. In an alternative embodiment the space is provided in the upper section of a subsidiary tank connected to the chamber 5 (Fig. 2, not shown). The coating liquid is supplied to the chamber 5 by pump 11 at a rate controlled by sensor 6. An additional coating layer may be applied at the exit side of the doctor edge, Figs. 3 and 4, not shown.
