Abstract

A copolymer of an unsaturated fatty acid derived from a drying or semi-drying oil and a vinyl or vinylidene monomer is reacted with a monoepoxy compound having a molecular weight of more than 70 in an amount such that the free carboxyl groups in the polymer are partially or fully reacted with the epoxy groups. Specified acids are those obtained from natural oils e.g. linseed, soya, safflower, wood, fish, castor and tall oils. The comonomer may be styrene, vinyl toluene, methyl styrene, divinyl benzene or (meth)acrylic acid and its derivatives. The monoepoxy compound is e.g. cyclohexene oxide, styrene oxide, a glycidyl ester or ether or epichlorohydrin The hydroxyl groups produced on reaction with the epoxy group may be esterified by carboxyl groups remaining in the copolymer or present in additional compounds. In Example I an oleic acid/linoleic acid mixture is copolymerized with styrene and acrylic acid using benzoyl peroxide as catalyst. The copolymer produced is reacted with 1-n-butoxy-2, 3-epoxypropane and may be reacted subsequently with a polyisocyanate to yield a polyurethane. The epoxy compound used in Example II is cyclohexene oxide and the esterified copolymer is post-esterified and also, if desired, cured by heating. In Example III, castor oil fatty acid is copolymerized with methacrylic acid and vinyl toluene, the copolymer produced being reacted with epichlorhydrin.
