Screw and centrifugal Sprengel pumps. -In a rotary compressor or exhauster of the type in which a rotary member a having a gas passage on its periphery rotates in an outer member i containing a centrifugally-held body of liquid, the rotor a is provided with one or more helical threads b, which may be interrupted or continuous, extending across the width of the member but for a portion only of its circumference. Shrouding-plates may be provided in which inlet and outlet openings d, c for the gas are formed. Part of the gas passage may be restricted by means of thickened portions f of the root of the thread, as shown in Fig. 7. In order to maintain a given volume of liquid, the outer member i is provided at or near its medium plane with overflow pipes k projecting into the space between the members and discharging to a peripheral channel (not shown). Paddles g may be fitted on the member a to assist the centrifugal action on the liquid.
