Abstract

1,157,913. Tyre reinforcement cords. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORP. 19 Sept., 1966, No. 41645/66. Heading B7C. [Also in Divisions C3 and D1] A glass fibre-reinforced elastomeric material for use in vehicle tyres is made by coating the glass fibres 18 with an organo-silicon compound 26, gathering the fibres into a bundle before or after coating, impregnating the fibre bundle with an elastomer 42, coating the impregnated bundle with an interfacial bonding agent, then combining the impregnated bundle with a second elastomeric material 44, see Fig. 5 (not shown). By " fibres " is meant continuous filaments or yarns of discontinuous fibres. The organo-silicon compound is a silane, or its hydrolysis or polymerization products having 1-3 hydrolysable groups and a group containing an amino radical. Preferably, this latter group contains less than eight carbon atoms. Specified silanes are: gamma-aminopropyltriethoxy silane, gamma-aminopropylpolyvinyldiethoxy silane, gamma - (triethoxysilylpropylamide) propyl amine, beta-aminoalkyltriethoxy silane, aniline silane derivatives, N - (gamma - triethoxysilylpropyl) propylamine, gamma-(triethoxysilylpropyloxy) propylamine, para - aminophenyltriethoxy silane, 2,3- glycidoxy - propyltriethoxy silane and 3,4- glycidoxybutyl-triethoxy silane. The interfacial bonding agent is a substance which enhances the interbonded relationship and blending between the first and second elastomers; examples of such substances are amino silane, carboxylato silane, a Werner complex having an amino or carboxylato group co-ordinated with the chromium atom, or a poly-functional compound, e.g. ethylene dimethacrylate or an isocyanate or a phenolic end-blocked isocyanate. The coating composition can contain water, glycerine, dextrinized starch, hydrogenated vegetable oil, wetting agent, e.g. lauryl amine acetate, emulsifying agent, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, acetic acid, paraffin wax, imidized polyester resin, polyglycol condensate, gelatin, dibasic ammonium phosphate. The coating can be applied by spraying, roller coating or flow coating. Excess coating composition can be removed by wiping after which the fibre bundle is dried. The first and second elastomer can be the same, e.g. natural and synthetic rubbers such as polymers of chloroprene, butylene and isoprene, neoprene, butadiene polymers and copolymers with styrene, acrylonitrile and acrylates and chlorinated rubbers. The elastomer can be cured or vulcanized under heat and pressure. The first elastomer can be mixed with magnesium oxide, zinc oxide, carbon black, trialkyl thiourea, diphenyl-amineacetone product, stearic acid, dicumyl peroxide, resorcinol-formaldehyde resin, formaldehyde, ammonium hydroxide, vinyl pyridine terpolymer and sodium hydroxide. The first elastomer impregnant can be worked into the fibres by flexing the fibre bundle or by pressure. The impregnated fibres can be dried and coated with a lubricating powder, e.g. zinc stearate, finely divided graphite or silica dust, see Fig. 7, not shown. The impregnated fibres can be plied or twisted into yarns or cords before being combined with the second elastomer. The glass fibre-reinforced material can be formed, with or without twisting, plying or weaving into belting, tubing and tyres, see Fig. 5 (not shown).
