Abstract

1,157,870. Speech scrambling device. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 17 April, 1968 [21 April, 1967], No. 18474/67. Heading H4R. Speech signal is scrambled by encoding it in digital form, enciphering the digital signal, decoding the digital signal, and transmitting the resulting analogue signal. At the receiver the analogue signal is encoded in digital form, the digital signal deciphered by the inverse of the ciphering process, and the digital signal decoded to reproduce the original speech signal. The speech may be encoded into a p.c.m. signal by the vibrational compounding coder of Specification 1,135,684. The digital signals may be enciphered by adding binary samples obtained from a voice frequency quasi random waveform, by interchanging the digits in a predetermined manner, or by inverting predetermined digits. The enciphering system may be changed periodically. The transmitter and receiver may require synchronization to ensure that the analogue wave at the receiver is sampled at the correct instants.
