A loose leaf file comprises a front cover 1 and a back cover 2 joined to a spine 3 and a loose leaf mechanism 11 on or adjacent to the spine, the covers and spine being formed of one soft continuous sheet 4 while the covers 1 and 2 are provided with inner sheets 5, 6, which may be stiff, and which are welded to the cover on at at least two edges but not to the spine. The spine comprises only the single layer of material. A printed paper or like insert sheet 21 may be inserted between the outer cover and the inner sheets 5, 6 to carry changeable identification matter, mathematical tables colour sheets or the like so the file can be used for a number of purposes. The inner sheets 5, 6 may be folded back upon themselves as at 9, 10 and may embrace stiffening or padding strips 16, 17 and provide rounded edges 25, 26 so that damage to the outer cover is avoided. Cut-outs 27 may be provided to locate the apices of the claws of the loose leaf mechanism 11 and studs 28 hold the claws in the cut-outs. The loose leaf mechanism may be attached to the spine, Figs. 8-11, not shown, by an external rail (20) having projections (18) extending through apertures (19) in the spine which engage a beading (30) on the loose leaf mechanism. The rail (20) may be covered with a plastic layer (31). In a further embodiment, Fig. 13, the cover is formed from a plastic tube 32 with thickened parts 37, 38.
