Abstract

1,156,792. Paper. COURTAULDS Ltd. 4 July, 1965 [2 July, 1965], No. 28065/65. Heading D2B. Paper is made from an aqueous dispersion of regenerated cellulose staple fibres containing a synthetic resin cured in the fibres. A tow of regenerated cellulose fibres may be impregnated with a synthetic resin precursor or partially cured synthetic resin, and then dried and the resin cured, the fibres being cut to staple length before or after the drying and curing, or staple fibres may be impregnated, dried and cured. In either case the treated staple fibres are dispersed in water and the dispersion laid and dewatered. In the example, a tow of regenerated cellulose is padded with a solution of urea-formaldehyde precondensate and zinc nitrate in water, dried at 95‹C and cured at 140‹C. The tow is then cut to #-inch staple, dispersed in water and made into paper. Other synthetic resins that may be used are phenol - formaldehyde and melamine - formaldehyde.
