Abstract
1,156,421. Oxidation of alkyl benzenes. PRINCETON CHEMICAL RESEARCH Inc. 27 Jan., 1967 [27 April, 1966], No. 4266/67. Heading C2C. Alkyl benzenes are oxidized to carboxylic acids (or anhydrides thereof) in the presence of a catalyst comprising V and Mo, Cr, Ag, Ti, W or Sn in the form of a compound with oxygen the ratio V : other metal being 0À5 to 100 :1 and the surface area of the catalyst being less than 3m<SP>2</SP>/gm. Examples describe the oxidation of dimers to pyromellitic diamhydride at 475‹ C. by passage through a tubular reactor.
