Abstract

1,156,071. Blow moulding; orientation. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. 30 June, 1966, No. 29425/66. Heading B5A. Hollow articles of crystallizable thermoplastics are produced by extruding a parison, cooling it to crystallize the material and reheating to just below the melting-point before expanding it by internal fluid pressure. The cooling and reheating may be confined to the outer surface. The apparatus, Fig. 3, may comprise an elongated sizing sleeve 12 attached to the extruder 10, a jacket 13 around it, defining annular cavities 14, 19 therebetween, means to supply 16 and withdraw 17 coolant to and from cavity 14, means to supply 18 and withdraw 20 reheating fluid to and from cavity 19, a plurality of holes 23 to evacuate the sleeve and draw the parison to the sides thereof and blow mould halves 47 mounted on belts 48 49. The parison may alternatively pass to a blow mould (Fig. 2, not shown) via rolls (36, 37) operating faster than extrusion to stretch the parison, and heating bath (38) and conditioning sleeve (39), e.g. for surface cooling.
