Apparatus for reclaiming material from a pile 4, Fig. 1, comprises a bridge 1 adapted to travel perpendicularly to the front face of the pile, a carriage 9 mounted on the bridge for travel therealong, a loosening device 11 on the carriage adapted to loosen material from the upper region of the pile, a belt conveyer 7 extending longitudinally of the bridge, and a conveyer 16 for transferring loosened material to the conveyer 7, the carriage carrying a scraper blade 13 adapted to loosen material from the lower region of the pile, and a scraper plate 14 adapted to lift loosened material from the ground and feed it to the conveyer 16. The conveyer 7 feeds a further conveyer 8. The device 11 is a scraper chain which is movable about a bottom pivot by a winch 10. The apparatus has a scraper plate 14 on either side of the chain 11 so that the carriage can operate in either direction along the bridge. In a second embodiment, Figs. 5 to 7 (not shown), two scraper blades are mounted one on either side of the chain 11 for pivotal movement to and from a working position depending on the direction of movement of the carriage. The chain 11, the scraper blades and a scraper plate may be adjustable relative to the carriage in a direction perpendicular to the front face of the pile, and may be urged against the latter by spring force or hydraulic devices. In a third embodiment, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), having a scraper plate on either side of the chain 11, these plates are formed as jigging conveyers and may have teeth at their outer edges. In a fourth embodiment, Fig. 10, the conveyer 16 is replaced by a conveyer 45 which co-operates with a second conveyer 51 to feed a conveyer 55 extending along the bridge.
