Abstract

1,154,575. Sheet forming; seaming non- metallic sheet material. FARBWEBKE HOECHST A.G. 30 June, 1966 [30 June, 1965], No. 29497/66. Headings B5A and B5K. A pipe fitting is made by sheet forming each half of the fitting between a mould and an associated core, exposing the rim of each half whilst it is retained within its mould, heating the exposed rims and finally moving the moulds together to weld the two halves into an integral fitting. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, halves 5, 6 of a branched pipe fitting are formed between mould halves 1 and 2 and cores 3 and 4 respectively. The top layer of a facing 8 is then removed from each mould half to expose the rim of each half 5 and 6, a heating plate inserted between the mould halves, and mould halves forwarded together to press the rims against the plate. The mould halves are subsequently retracted, the heating plate removed, the lower layer of each facing removed, and the mould halves re-forwarded to press the rims together and complete the formation of the pipe fitting. In a second embodiment, see Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), a single sheet is bent around a core and the core enclosed by two mould halves to preliminarily form the fitting. Facing layers are then removed from the middle of the core and the mould halves and a heating plate substituted against which the rims of the fitting are pressed, said plate subsequently being removed and the mould halves moved together again to form the complete article as before. In this case the welded seam only extends partway round the fitting. In a third embodiment (see Figs. 7 and 8, not shown) the mould halves and the core are foldable about a hinge from a flattened position to a position in which the mould halves surround the core.
